Bocce Basics

               NASSAU GROVE BOCCE LEAGUE BASICS

                                        (Updated 2026)

TEAMS – Teams consist of 4 players and are designated by letter.

A Note on Team Names: Feel free to give your team a name. If you do, please start the name with the letter designation of your team and inform the Record Keeper of your name.

SCHEDULING – Matches are generally scheduled during the week, beginning at 5:00 pm. However, matches can be rescheduled by agreement of the two teams to another day or time during the same week, if the court is free.

SUBSTITUTIONS – As in previous years, every player is responsible for getting their own substitute. Telephone calls are more effective than emails when seeking a sub. It’s good (and nice) to use different substitutes rather than picking the same ones each time.

COMMUNICATION – Each team should have a primary contact point (PCP) for rescheduling. Email is the preferred method for distributing information, announcements, etc. Please let the Record Keeper know if your email is not functioning or you changed your email address. Report scores or scheduling changes to the Record Keeper. Also let the Record Keeper know who your primary contact person is so that can be published with the roster.

Note:

It is recommended that everyone keep a list of the bocce players’ email addresses. . When you need to make a change, get a sub, etc., email your request to the list so everyone is informed. For rescheduling this would document the “first come/first served” date and time for the court.

TEAM SCORING FOR STANDINGS

Seeding in the playoffs is determined by a Team’s ranking based on points

  1. Teams earn 1 point for each game they win in a specific match, a possible 3 points if the team wins all 3 games, 2 points for 2 games won, etc.
  2. Teams earn an additional 1 point for winning a match in the best of three games.  Hence teams can earn as many as 4 points in a match or as few as 0 points.
  3. Report the outcome of the Match to the Record Keeper

EQUIPMENT – The Bocce League equipment is kept in a locked closet, just inside the outdoor ladies’ room door, alongside the court.

  • The Key to the closet is found in a lock box on the back of the scoreboard on the Bocce The lockbox code is 7153 (the last four numbers of the Clubhouse address.)
  • Upon arrival for a match, one of the teams gets the key, unlocks the closet and takes the bocce ball equipment to the
  • That team is responsible for putting the equipment back in the closet and returning the key to the
  • The code for entry to the Ladies Room is (the Men’s room is the same) 2278
  • A second practice set of bocce balls, belonging to the HOA, are in a bag in the storage bin, between the outdoor restrooms and are available for everyone’s use at other

RAIN OUTS & RESCHEDULING:

In the event players decide to reschedule their match due to rain, or other circumstances, those involved may reschedule to another day and time, preferably before either team’s next scheduled match. If rain forces a discontinuation of a game before completed, the match should be played or continued as soon as possible. In the event of several days of rain, and all teams need to reschedule notify the Record Keeper and all the other teams of your make-up date/time to avoid conflicts.

A WORD ABOUT COURT CONDITIONS AND POSTPONEMENTS

If there has been substantial rain and no sun during any given day, the court will probably be wet. Likewise, if there is a huge downpour on a midafternoon without sun. The decision to play is up to those teams involved. If rain comes unexpectedly during a match, the remaining portion of a match can be played at another time. The teams should make note of the number of games remaining and the score, letting the Record Keeper and other teams know of date/time changes.
